Utah Attorney General John Swallow Resigns
On November 21, 2013, Utah Attorney General John Swallow
formally announced at a news conference that he is resigning. His
resignation is effective at 12:01 a.m on December 2,
2013. Only days after taking office in January, 2013, allegations of
unethical and potentially criminal conduct involving Swallow surfaced.
The controversy surrounding Swallow was the subject of extensive media
coverage and public debate.
The office of the Utah Attorney General has responsibility for
a wide variety of legal cases - both civil and criminal. The Attorney
General is often considered Utah's top law enforcement officer, and
leads one of the largest law offices in the state. While
Swallow was not directly involved in handling most criminal
prosecutions, his ability to
effectively lead the office has been questioned.
