Uintah Justice Court Information
The Uintah
Justice Court has jurisdiction over most misdemeanor charges that take
place inside the borders of Uintah, Utah. But the court's jurisdiction
is limited to class B misdemeanors, class C misdemeanors, and
infractions. More serious charges (felonies and class A misdemeanors)
must be heard in the Ogden District Court.
While the Uintah Justice Court's jurisdiciton is limited to lower-level
misdemeanors, the penalties and consequences for these charges can
still be serious. A class B misdemeanor is punishable by up to 180 days
jail and almost $2,000 in fines (including surcharge). The potential
penalties for a class C misdemeanor are roughly half that of a class B
misdemeanor. In addition to jail time and fines, a justice court
conviction can have other consequences such as loss of a driver
license, loss of the right to carry a firearm, and probation conditions
that can include drug treatment, drug testing, domestic violence
counseling, community services, and a variety of other requirements.
Even a misdemeanor case must be taken seriously. The prosecutors in
most justice courts have received special training focused on obtaining
convictions when appropriate. The procedural and substantive rules and
statutes governing a criminal case can be complex and confusing. In
