Penalties for a Misdemeanor Conviction in Utah

Misdemeanors in Utah are divided into three classes (levels): A, B, and C. At the class A level, the maximum penalty can include nearly a year in jail (364 days) and a fine and surcharge of almost $5,000 ($2,500 plus 90% surcharge. A class B misdemeanor is punishable by up to 180 days in jail. The maximum jail sentence for a class C misdemeanor is 90 days.

A court may suspend all or part of a jail sentence and place a defendant on probation. Conditions of probation can vary depending on the specific facts of a case and the circumstances of an individual defendant. Common conditions of probation include community service, counseling or treatment, drug testing, and formal supervision.

In addition to the direct penalties imposed by the court, a misdemeanor conviction can also carry other consequences. Employment opportunities, professional licensing, driver license, and the right to possess firearms are just a few examples of ways in which even a misdemeanor conviction can affect your life.
