Can I get a copy of my criminal history report?
Utah Criminal History Report Requests
The process for getting your Utah criminal history report is relatively straightforward.

The best defense attorneys ask questions that police don’t.
If you plan to be in the Taylorsville area, you can obtain a copy of your own report on the spot by going to the Utah Department of Public Safety BCI office.
If Taylorsville is not on your immediate travel itinerary, you can also request a copy of your RAP sheet by mail.
Instructions and a request form can be found online on BCI’s website – https://bci.utah.gov/criminal-records/obtain-a-copy-of-your-own-criminal-history-record/
The best attorneys understand that the effects of a criminal charge extend beyond the courtroom.

FBI Background Checks/Reports
Getting a copy of your federal criminal history report is a little more complicated, but still very manageable.
The first link below is for a page on the FBI’s website with information on obtaining “Identity History Reports” (also known as RAP sheets, criminal history reports, or background checks).
- FBI page on background checks – https://www.fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you/more-fbi-services-and-information/identity-history-summary-checks
The page provides instructions and information on requesting a report online, through the U.S. Mail, or using an approved “channeler” – private companies that can sometimes expedite the process.

Understanding your goals is the first step to developing the best defense strategy.
The second link provides a list of FBI-approved channelers.

As always, if you have questions or run into trouble it is always a good idea to get good advice from a trusted attorney.
